How the archive approaches rights in historical publications, and how to raise a claim or correction.

Preserving mid-century periodicals means working amid genuinely unsettled rights. Many publications of this era entered the public domain through non-renewal; others remain protected; for many, the status is simply unknown. Our approach is conservative and documented.
Our working rules
- Ownership of a physical copy is not a license. We never produce a commercial reprint or downloadable edition merely because we own the magazine. Editions are produced only from material that is public domain, licensed, or otherwise cleared — and each edition states its basis.
- Every record carries a rights status. Catalog records and digital assets are tagged with a rights status (for example: public domain confirmed, copyright active, status uncertain, research use only). Where status is uncertain, public display is limited accordingly.
- Preservation scanning is not publication. We digitize holdings for preservation and internal documentation. What we display publicly is a deliberately limited selection consistent with our rights review.
- Research access is controlled. Researchers may be granted access to materials that cannot be published generally, under terms that restrict further reproduction.
Raising a claim, correction, or concern
We maintain a single process for copyright claims, misidentification, credit corrections, and privacy concerns from models, photographers, artists, or their families and estates. We treat inquiries from people depicted in this material, and their families, with particular care.
To raise a concern, write to archive@provenancerevue.com with “Rights” in the subject line, including:
- The URL or accession number of the material in question.
- Your relationship to the material (rights holder, subject, family member, researcher).
- What you believe is wrong, and the outcome you are asking for.
We acknowledge within 5 business days. Where a claim is plausible on its face, we restrict public display of the material while we review. Corrections are made transparently; removals are recorded internally so the material is not inadvertently republished.
